How to make a snowman handprint

STEP ONE: Prepare your workspace

Before you get started, prepare your workspace by laying out all of your craft supplies. You'll want to make sure your paper is thick enough for oil pastels.

Additionally, invite your child to choose the colours for the scarves on the snowmen.

STEP TWO: Create a handprint cut-out

Help your child place their hand on the blank piece of paper to create a handprint cut-out template. Trace around their hand and help them cut it out with scissors.

STEP THREE: Colour the background

Place the cut-out hand template on the thick drawing paper that you'll use for your snowman scene towards the bottom as shown below. You may opt to use a paperclip or a small piece of tape on the back to temporarily secure it in place.

Next, use a light blue oil pastel to colour the bottom portion around the handprint shape, making sure to leave space towards the top of the paper as shown.

Colour the remaining space at the top of the paper in the darker-coloured blue oil pastel.

Wrap some tissue paper around your finger and blend the light blue shade together. Repeat for the darker blue colour. Then, blend the line between the two colours as shown below.

Remove the handprint cut-out template before moving on to the next step.

STEP FOUR: Add snowman details

Start adding details on the snowman by drawing hat shapes on the top of each finger with a pencil. Use a black marker to fill in the shapes.

Snowman craft variation ideas

Enhance this snowman handprint activity by trying some of these other ideas:

  • Use felt shapes for hats and scarves instead of simply drawing them on
  • Add sparkly snowflakes in the background by applying glue and glitter
  • Glue mini pom poms in place of drawing the buttons
  • Glue cotton balls towards the bottom to resemble snow
  • Invite your child to experiment with other materials such as sequins, ribbon, or beads
  • Use glow-in-the-dark paint in the background or as an outline for a fun touch
